04/09/2017 0:00 - Crop Progress and Condition Reports
GEA – Agricultural Strategic Guide/BCR
Alert by sudden appearance of yellow rust in wheat

The disease appeared suddenly and colonized the south of the province of Santa Fe and the north of Buenos Aires. In much of this area, wheats are being developed under very humid conditions that favor fungal proliferation.

Yellow rust in wheat

The wheat crop was suddenly attacked by yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis). The environments in which wheats are being developed are overflowing with water. The temperatures, which for the second week showed maximums of 25 to 30 ºC, provide an ideal environment for the advancement of diseases. Engineers who collaborate with GEA urge producers and technicians to review the plots because they can find this surprise. The localities of Teodelina, 9 de Julio, Carlos Casares and Lincoln are in the focus by the high incidence of yellow rust.

August ends with 133 mm in Pergamino (north of Buenos Aires)

The difference in rainfall between northern Buenos Aires and Cordoba, which was already being expressed in July, continued to deepen. In Marcos Juárez, one of the towns most benefited by precipitation in Córdoba, received only 35 mm in August. The unequal distribution of rain generates different panoramas, which worsen the condition of the wheat. Due to the excesses of water and also due to their lack, the wheats grouped as very good to excellent conditions went from 70% to 55%. Wheats of regular classification amount to 20%. The bad ones remain quantified with 5%.

Sowing of corn delayed by water

In the north of Buenos Aires and the southern end of Santa Fe the start is limited by the excesses of water. The lack of floor relegates planting by mid-September. On the contrary, in the west of Cordoba and south-central of Santa Fe, it is the lack of water that does not allow the beginning of the implantation. It takes between 15 and 20 mm to moisten the first few centimeters of the floor. The campaign promises to implement 1.03 millions of hectares of corn, 3% more than last year.
