24/04/2017 0:00 - Agricultural Commodities Market
Cereals, between optimism and caution

Rainfalls, excessive soil moisture and poor road conditions have imposed significant delays in the harvest progress of corn in Argentina, which is estimated at around 20% of the sown area, 10 percentage points behind the five year average. Besides, farmers are focused on soybean harvest in core area due to its greater weather vulnerability.

Meanwhile, local prices do not seem to feel the harvest pressure due to an active export demand. Corn cash prices remain at US$ 151/ton, while forward prices for May delivery have fallen to US$ 150/ton. The wide range of forward prices for different delivery months is reflecting the buyers efforts to deal with potential logistics problems that may arise from the expected record production arrivals in the upcoming months.

Optimism for wheat

Though agricultural commodities’ prices have been amidst a downward trend during the last weeks, wheat in Argentina is avoiding the pressure. The expectation of a smaller seeded area in the United States as well as unfavorable growing conditions for the crop in Europe became bullish fundamentals for local prices. With Brazil expected to buy another 2 or 3 million tons of Argentinian wheat in the current season, we expect that 2016/2017 total exports will reach 10 million tons

Meanwhile, producers are starting to define seeding intentions for the next crop year. Based on the need to cope with excessive soil moisture and the expected favorable margins -as discussed the previous week-, we expect an increase in Argentina's seeded área with wheat to a range between 5.3 and 5.5 million hectares.
