17/11/2017 0:00 - Crop Progress and Condition Reports
GEA – Agricultural Strategic Guide/BCR
The wheat harvest began with yields of 4,2 Tn/ha and temperatures of 40 ° C

The first plots of wheat harvested exceed expectations. It also surprised the weather: maximum of up to 40 ° C with storms of wind and dust. The thermal hit rammed the more backward wheats that are filling their grains. Great week of sowing of soybeans, 1.9 million hectares were made. But everything stopped, waiting for the return of the rains.

Wheat: yields surprised in the first days of harvest

Averages of 4,2 Tn/ha in the first plots of the south center of Santa Fe. Although the advance is very incipient, it is a good sign for the crop in a year with so much disease pressure. There were even maximum yields of 5,8 Tn in the surroundings of Cañada de Gómez and Villa Eloísa, in Santa Fe. But there are also plots very affected by diseases. In General Pinto, in the north of Buenos Aires, yields fall back to 3,0 Tn/ha.

However, the high temperatures, the wind blowing from the north and the scarce rains leave many doubts about the impact this would have on the weight of the grains. In the last week, the maximum averaged between 34 and 38 ° C, with extreme values that exceeded even 40 ° C in Córdoba and Santa Fe.

Sowing of soybean: 1.9 million hectares done in seven days

The weekly progress stands at 38 points, and if it were not for the lack of water, the planting of the oilseed in the region had already finished. Due to the great activity carried out during the last two weeks, the campaign became the most advanced of the last 5 years. But the lack of water in the arable layer put a brake on the plantation. There are 735,000 hectares ahead, awaiting new rains, which could take place next Tuesday or Wednesday.

There is also a great advance of the weeds: Conyza sp., Amaranthus sp. and resistant grasses. Those who have applied preemergent herbicides in time have avoided the threat with better luck. Pests begin to be present in soybean plants: tiny bugs, Helicoverpa sp. and other cutworms. Megascelis and lobsters advance through the west of Córdoba.
